What is ISO 14001?

ISO 14001 is the international standard with requirements for an environmental management system. The environmental management system is used to develop an environmental policy appropriate to the organization and to ensure its implementation. The basis for the environmental management system is the “plan-do-check-act” cycle (PDCA). ISO 14001 sets the following requirements for the results of the management system:

  • continuous improvement of performance and environmental protection (e.g. by preventing environmental pollution);
  • managing the environmental risks resulting from the organization's activities;
  • meet at least the applicable legal requirements.

This involves an organization's ability to influence the environment from a “life cycle” perspective. This means that the possible environmental aspects of suppliers and customers also fall within the environmental management system.

By involving stakeholder information in developing environmental policy, ISO 14001 is in line with the ISO 26000 Sustainable Business Directive.

‍

If you choose this standard, you can quickly get started to certify your organization under the guidance of your own consultant. You are not obliged to use the standard as set up by default. You have all the flexibility to update, modify forms and, based on this, set up your own workflows and create reports.

‍

If you want to make use of ISO2 HANDLE for ISO 14001, please contact one of our external consultants in the field of ISO 14001. They can request an environment for you and/or support you in implementing the standard. If you already have your own partner, no problem. Your partner can do the substantive implementation and we will then support you with the technical part.

What are the key points in ISO 14001?

The key points in the ISO 14001:2015 standard are:

  • Developing environmental policy at a more strategic level
  • Accountability and management involvement
  • Involve stakeholders
  • Application of a life cycle perspective
  • Substantiating and implementing internal and external communication
  • Information quality
  • Insight into compliance status
  • The info sheet provides more insight into the differences, which are explained with examples

The NEN-EN-ISO 14001:2015 is published in the Netherlands by NEN (Dutch Standards Institute). The 'EN' stands for acceptance as a European Standard by CEN (the European Standards Institute). The NEN-EN-ISO 14004:2015 explains the NEN-EN-ISO 14001. Various other standards related to environmental management are available in the “ISO 14000 series”.

‍

All ISO standards are set up in accordance with the HLS, which should make it easy for organizations to integrate their quality, environment and health and safety management systems.

Management System

Why a digital management system for ISO 14001?

Many organizations have already switched from a “handbook in the closet” to an environment such as SharePoint or a Document Management System to also be able to view their documentation remotely.

But then these questions and sources of stress linger:

  • How do I easily analyse relevant environmental aspects? (MAR)
  • How do you control the tasks of the objectives from the environmental aspects register?
  • Who helps employees to remind employees about the tasks in a timely manner?
  • How do I easily secure all registrations?
  • What helps to gain an easy and quick insight into performance against goals?
  • How can I quickly make analyses and present them to colleagues?
