What is Six Sigma?

Six Sigma is a quality control method that focuses on reducing variation and improving the quality of processes and products. It includes the use of statistical methods and analytical tools to identify and solve problems in processes. The method focuses on reducing variation in a process by identifying and eliminating the causes of this variation. This is done by performing statistical analyses and applying improvement methods such as DMAIC (Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, Control) or DMADV (Define, Measure, Analyze, Design, Verify).

Developed by Motorola in the 1980s, Six Sigma is now used worldwide in various industries and sectors, including manufacturing, services, healthcare and government. It is a structured method that ensures consistent, measurable and sustainable improvements in processes and products.

As a QHSE, KAM manager you would like to optimize your business processes and improve the quality of your products and services. However, sometimes you run into complex issues that have a negative impact on your organization's performance. Fortunately, there is a proven methodology that can help you address these challenges and optimize your business processes for better results: Six Sigma.

5 steps in Six Sigma — DMAIC

Six Sigma — DMAIC stands for: Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve and Control. Let's take a detailed look at each phase and how it can be used as a solution to problems within organizations.

Define

In this phase, the problem is clearly defined and the goals and objectives of the project are defined. It includes forming a project team, determining the scope of the project, and identifying key stakeholders. A clear definition of the problem and setting goals are essential for a successful Six Sigma — DMAIC implementation.

More

In this phase, data is collected to measure the current performance of the process. Measuring current performance is essential to understand the problem and to monitor progress. Using advanced measurement techniques, we can capture data, analyse measurements and statistics and gain insight into the current state of the process.

Analysis

In this phase, the data is analyzed to identify the causes of the problem or variation. Through the Analysis phase, we can apply advanced analysis techniques to discover patterns, trends and relationships in the data. This helps us identify the root cause of the problem and identify targeted improvement measures.

Improve

In this phase, solutions are developed and implemented to address the identified issues. Using the improvement phase, we can develop various solutions and evaluate which ones are most effective. Through simulations and scenario analyses, we can evaluate the impact of various solutions before they are implemented.

Check

In this phase, the results of the improvements are monitored and secured to ensure that the desired performance is maintained. With the help of the Control phase, we can set, monitor and report performance indicators (KPIs). In addition to the traditional DMAIC phases, we often add an extra step: standardization. Here, the improved working method is standardized and integrated into the organization.

How do you ensure a good implementation of Six Sigma - DMAIC?

Optimizing business processes and improving the quality of products and services are important goals for every organization. An effective way to achieve these goals is to apply Six Sigma — DMAIC. However, implementing Six Sigma — DMAIC can be complex with a lot of data to collect, analyse and interpret. That is why modern management software, such as ISO2 HANDLE, be a valuable tool to facilitate and accelerate the implementation of Six Sigma — DMAIC.

With ISO2 HANDLE data can be collected and analyzed efficiently, processes visualized and optimized, and improvement measures monitored and managed. This helps automate data collection and analysis, identify trends and patterns in data, generate reports and dashboards to track the progress of improvement projects, and share information and communication between team members and stakeholders. As QHSE, KAM managers, it is important to increase the efficiency of implementing Six Sigma — DMAIC and to support decision-making. With the help of modern management software such as ISO2 HANDLE this can be done easily and quickly. In this way, you can contribute to the optimization of business processes and the improvement of the quality of products and services.
